The problem with RAID….
Hard drives are bound to fail. In a RAID-6 system, when a drive fails, it is simply “hot swapped” for a new drive, and the RAID software rebuilds the drive from information previously saved. However, the advance of technology has exposed problems with the RAID system, as follows:
  • As drive sizes have increased, the rebuild times have increased to the point that a 2 Terabyte drive may take at least 50 hours to rebuild.
  • RAID-6 with double parity reduces usable storage by 25 to 35% while also reducing write performance.
  • All drives in RAID systems must spin continuously, with the corresponding power and cooling demands.
AmpliStor, a new system for data storage from AmpliData, does not use RAID and does not require any form of replication. Instead it stores data, protected by Erasure Codes, which “transform a data object (files or blocks) into a longer message (typically a linear equation) with “n” data blobs…” Then, data can be recovered from a subset of the data blobs. It then uses “BitSpread” to store the data redundantly across a large number of disks, and “BitDynamics” to monitor capacity to ensure scalability.

This means, that Amplistor:

  • Reduces the risk of data loss to “.0073% or once 14,000 years”.
  • Saves power and cooling while increasing the lifetimes because disks do not need to spin continuously.
  • Increases the amount of usable storage because it uses 50 to 70% less storage capacity than RAID-6.
  • Reduces management effort.
