The problem with RAID….
Hard drives are bound to fail.
In a RAID-6 system, when a drive fails, it is simply
“hot swapped” for a new drive, and the RAID software
rebuilds the drive from information previously
saved. However, the advance of technology has
exposed problems with the RAID system, as follows:
As drive sizes have
increased, the rebuild times have increased to the
point that a 2 Terabyte drive may take at least 50
hours to rebuild.
RAID-6 with double
parity reduces usable storage by 25 to 35% while
also reducing write performance.
All drives in RAID
systems must spin continuously, with the
corresponding power and cooling demands.
AmpliStor, a new system for
data storage from AmpliData, does not use RAID and
does not require any form of replication. Instead it
stores data, protected by Erasure Codes, which
“transform a data object (files or blocks) into a
longer message (typically a linear equation) with
“n” data blobs…” Then, data can be recovered from a
subset of the data blobs. It then uses “BitSpread”
to store the data redundantly across a large number
of disks, and “BitDynamics” to monitor capacity to
ensure scalability.
This means, that Amplistor:
Reduces the risk of
data loss to “.0073% or once 14,000 years”.
Saves power and
cooling while increasing the lifetimes because disks
do not need to spin continuously.
Increases the amount
of usable storage because it uses 50 to 70% less
storage capacity than RAID-6.
Reduces management
effort.
